Licensed Hazardous Material Pickup That Follows Missouri & Illinois Regulations

You’re not alone if you’ve got a garage full of mystery liquids, expired bug spray, or a propane tank from the 90s that’s been sitting there so long you’ve started considering it part of the family.

Maybe it’s that half-empty can of deck stain from 2003, or those cleaning chemicals your mother-in-law bought in bulk during Y2K prep. We get it, nobody wants to be the person who accidentally poisoned the neighborhood groundwater or got slapped with a hefty fine for tossing the wrong thing in the regular trash.

Here’s the thing about hazardous waste: it’s not just “difficult junk.” It’s the stuff that can actually hurt people, contaminate soil, or cause landfill fires that make the evening news. And in Missouri and Illinois, there are real laws about how this stuff gets disposed of, laws with real fines attached.

That’s exactly why families and businesses have been calling MrJunk® for over 20 years.

Since 2005, we’ve been the crew that handles what others won’t touch.

From Dax and his team in Columbia dealing with inherited garages full of agricultural chemicals, to Trevor in Alton and St. Louis clearing out rental properties with mystery containers, to Chris at Lake of the Ozarks and Jefferson City tackling decades of pool chemicals and boat maintenance supplies, we’ve seen it all across Missouri and Illinois, and we know how to handle it safely and legally.

SCHEDULE A FREE ESTIMATE

Here’s what actually sets us apart on this kind of work: our crews are trained to identify, sort, and transport hazardous materials according to state and federal regulations. We don’t just toss everything in the back of a truck and hope for the best.

We know which items need special packaging, which ones can’t ride together, and exactly where each type of material has to go for proper disposal or recycling.

That said, we’re not a hazmat superhero squad, and we won’t pretend to be. There’s a specific list of what we can take and what we can’t, and a few new limits worth knowing before you schedule. So let’s get specific.

Chemical & Hazardous Waste: What We Take (And What We Don’t)

Here’s the honest rundown. Some of this changed recently, so even if you’ve hired us before, give it a read.

The short version: we handle a solid list of everyday hazardous materials, we cap a few of them by the gallon, and there are some paint products we’ve stopped taking because the disposal facilities won’t accept them from a hauler like us. More on that second part in the next section.

Not sure where your item lands? Text us a photo before you schedule. After 20 years, we’re pretty good at sorting it out from a picture.

Hazardous Materials We Take

Paint & Spray Can Disposal

This is the part that changed, so read closely.

We take paint cans only if the paint is 100% dried out. Not a dry skin on top with a puddle underneath. Completely solid, all the way through. If you can flip the can over and nothing moves, we’re good.

Spray cans are a yes across the board. Spray paint, spray primer, empty or full, we’ll take them. Aerosols need special handling no matter how much is left inside, and we’re set up for that.

We’ll also take mineral spirits, up to 2 gallons.

What we can’t take anymore: wet or partially used paint, touch-up and sample containers, cans of primer, paint thinners, other solvents, acetone, and any stains or varnishes, including deck stains. We know that’s a shift from how we used to do things. The drop-off section below tells you exactly where those items go instead.

Cleaning, Pool & Yard Chemicals

Good news here, and no gallon limits on most of it:

  • All household cleaning supplies and disinfectants
  • Pool and spa chemicals
  • Pesticides and weed killers
  • Lubricants and degreasers

If it lives under your kitchen sink or in the pool shed and it’s got a warning label, odds are we’ll take it.

Automotive Fluids, Fuel & Propane

We handle the garage stuff too, with a couple of caps:

  • Motor oil, antifreeze, coolant, and brake fluid, up to 2 gallons total
  • Gasoline containers
  • Small to medium propane tanks

We do not take kerosene or lamp oil.

Hazardous Materials We Can’t Take (And Where They Go Instead)

Some stuff is too dangerous even for us, and some of it we simply aren’t licensed to move. Either way, if you’ve got any of the following, we’ll point you to the right place instead of leaving you stuck:

  • Bio-medical waste (needles, medications)
  • Radioactive materials
  • Asbestos materials
  • Lead-based paint
  • Mystery liquids with no labels
  • Explosives or ammunition
  • Wet or partially used paint, touch-up and sample containers, and cans of primer
  • Paint thinners, solvents, and acetone
  • Stains, varnishes, and deck stains
  • Kerosene and lamp oil

Not sure which pile your stuff falls in? Send us a photo before you schedule. After two decades, we’ve gotten pretty good at identifying mystery containers from a phone picture.

Where to Dispose of Hazardous Waste Yourself: Drop-Off Sites in Missouri & Illinois

Okay, so here’s the honest part, and it’s worth understanding because it explains that whole “can’t take” list above.

The city and county household hazardous waste programs around here are set up for residents dropping off their own waste. Most of them flat out won’t accept chemicals delivered by a junk removal company, even when those chemicals came from a home. The second a hauler shows up with a truck full of paint thinner and stain collected from other people’s garages, it stops being “household waste” in the eyes of the facility and becomes commercial hazardous waste, which triggers a whole different set of rules and permits.

Translation: for the items we can’t take, you dropping them off yourself is often the only free, legal path. We’re not passing the buck. It’s genuinely the rule, and we’d rather be upfront than have you pay a facility to reject us.

The good news is these programs are usually free or cheap for residents, and we’ve done the homework on where they are. Here’s where to go, organized by the areas we serve.

One important note before the list: schedules and collection dates change every year, and some programs run only in warmer months or by appointment. Always call the number listed to confirm current dates, hours, and what they’ll accept before you load up the car.

Area Where To Go Good To Know
Columbia, MO Columbia HHW Facility, 1313 Lakeview Ave • 573-874-2489 City residents, usually free. Takes latex, oil-based, stains, solvents, thinner. Call to confirm dates.
Lake of the Ozarks (Camden, Miller, Laclede) Lake Area Industries, 1720 N Business Rte 5, Camdenton • 573-346-7934 Monthly in warm months. No latex (dry it out and trash it). Call before bringing stains or thinner.
Lake of the Ozarks (Morgan / Versailles) Versailles HHW program, appointment only • 573-378-4634 ext. 1 Takes oil-based paint, stain, varnish, solvents, gasoline, pool chemicals. No latex.
St. Louis City & County HHWSTL • South: 291 E Hoffmeister Ave, St. Louis • North: 4100 Seven Hills Dr, Florissant • hhwstl.com Reservation usually required. Takes nearly everything, including latex & acetone. First 50 lbs often free.
St. Charles, Wentzville & Lake Saint Louis Recycle Works Central, 60 Triad South Dr, St. Charles • West, 2110 E Pitman Ave, Wentzville • 636-949-7900 Chemicals seasonal (about May to Sept), small fee, cash or check. No latex. Oil & antifreeze year-round.
Alton, IL & Madison County Madison County HHW, 249 N Old St. Louis Rd, Wood River • 618-296-5237 Appointment based, free for residents. For latex, stains & varnish use PaintCare (855-724-6809, ZIP 62002).

These are residential drop-off programs, so the resident who generated the waste generally needs to bring it in person. Schedules and accepted items change, so always call to confirm before you drive out.

Columbia, MO Hazardous Waste Drop-Off

Columbia city residents have it easy. The Columbia Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1313 Lakeview Avenue takes latex and oil-based paint, wood stains, varnishes, solvents, paint thinner, motor oil, antifreeze, pool and spa chemicals, acids, bases, cleaners, and pesticides. Normal residential quantities are free.

It generally runs the first and third Saturday morning of the month, roughly April through October. Call Columbia Solid Waste at 573-874-2489 to confirm the current dates and quantity limits (there’s usually a cap on how much paint you can bring per visit).

Columbia also runs a latex paint reuse shed at the same site, so if your leftover paint is still good, someone else might put it to use.

Lake of the Ozarks Drop-Off Sites (by County)

The Lake is the tricky one, because there’s no single program. It depends on your county.

Camden, Miller, and Laclede counties are served by Lake Area Industries at 1720 North Business Route 5 in Camdenton (573-346-7934). Their collection runs about once a month in the warmer part of the year and takes oil-based paint, lawn and garden chemicals, pool chemicals, household cleaners, and certain automotive fluids in labeled containers. Heads up: they do not take latex paint at the event. Instead, they’ll tell you to dry it out completely (mix in cat litter or sawdust) and put the solid can in the trash with the lid off. Stains, varnishes, acetone, and paint thinner aren’t clearly on their short list, so call first.

Morgan County and the Versailles side fall under a different district. Versailles runs an appointment-only program (573-378-4634, extension 1) that takes oil-based paint, stain, varnish, solvents, paint stripper, gasoline, automotive fluids, pool chemicals, pesticides, and some propane cylinders. They don’t take latex paint either.

St. Louis City & County Drop-Off

St. Louis City and County (plus Jefferson County) share the regional HHWSTL program, and it’s the most complete list around. There are two facilities: a South location at 291 East Hoffmeister Avenue in St. Louis and a North location at 4100 Seven Hills Drive in Florissant.

Reservations are usually required, though the North County site often allows Wednesday walk-ins for smaller loads. They take just about everything: latex, oil-based, stain, varnish, thinner, solvents, acetone, motor oil, gasoline, pool chemicals, even used cooking oil. The first 50 pounds is generally free, liquid latex paint is charged by the pound, and bigger loads get weighed. Check hhwstl.com or call ahead to book.

St. Charles, Wentzville & Lake St. Louis Drop-Off

All three cities are in St. Charles County, so they use the same program: Recycle Works Central at 60 Triad South Drive in St. Charles and Recycle Works West at 2110 East Pitman Avenue in Wentzville (636-949-7900).

Here’s the catch: hazardous chemicals are only accepted seasonally, roughly May through September, on weekdays. There’s a small fee (typically a flat rate for the first 50 pounds, then by the pound, cash or check only). They take oil-based paint and stain, acetone, paint thinner, gasoline, pool chemicals, pesticides, and more. They do not take latex paint, so dry it out and trash it. Motor oil, antifreeze, and used cooking oil can be dropped year-round through their regular recycling operation.

Alton, IL & Madison County Drop-Off

Alton residents use the Madison County Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 249 North Old St. Louis Road in Wood River (618-296-5237). It’s appointment-based and free for eligible household quantities. They take oil-based paint, paint thinner, cleaning solvents, motor oil, antifreeze, old gasoline, pool chemicals, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent lamps, and aerosols.

For latex paint, stains, and varnishes, Illinois now has a statewide PaintCare program with free drop-off sites at many local paint and hardware stores. Use the PaintCare locator with ZIP code 62002 or call 855-724-6809 to find the closest one. Note that Madison County does not take fire extinguishers or propane cylinders at its HHW facility, so those are ones to bring to us instead.

How to Transport Chemicals Safely

If you’re hauling this stuff to a drop-off yourself, a few quick rules keep it from becoming a bad day:

  • Keep everything in its original labeled container when you can
  • Never mix chemicals together to save space
  • Keep pool chlorine away from acids, ammonia, cleaners, and fuel
  • Tighten every lid and stand containers upright in a sturdy box
  • Put leaky containers inside a bigger container with cat litter or absorbent
  • Carry it in the trunk or truck bed, not up front next to you
  • Don’t leave chemicals baking in a hot car, and never pour any of it down a drain or onto the ground

Why Proper Hazardous Waste Disposal Matters: Fines, Safety & the Law

You know that nagging feeling every time you walk past that rusty can of something in the garage? That’s your common sense trying to tell you something.

It’s actually illegal to throw this stuff in regular trash. We’re not saying that to scare you, but the fines are real and they’re not small. Missouri and Illinois take environmental protection seriously, and for good reason. When hazardous materials hit a landfill, they can leach into groundwater, react with other chemicals, or start fires that smolder for weeks.

Beyond the legal side, there’s the safety side. That propane tank gathering dust since your last camping trip in 2015 could be leaking. Those old paint cans in the basement might be off-gassing stuff that isn’t great for your family. And don’t get us started on accidentally mixing cleaning chemicals. We’ve seen garages from Columbia to Alton that looked like a chemistry experiment somebody walked away from.

We treat hazardous waste removal like what it is. A responsibility to our community and the environment, not just another pickup. We live here too.

Real Hazardous Cleanout Stories from Missouri & Illinois

Twenty years of this work means twenty years of stories. Here are a few of the ones we still talk about.

Columbia: The Inherited Chemical Museum. Dax got a call from a woman who’d inherited her grandfather’s farm property outside Columbia. “The garage looked normal from the outside,” she told us, “but inside it was a museum of every pesticide, herbicide, and livestock treatment made since 1970.” Three hours and multiple trips later, we’d safely cleared over 80 containers of farm chemicals, some so old the labels had basically become historical documents.

Alton: The Rental Property Surprise. Trevor tells this one about a rental cleanout in the St. Louis metro where the previous tenant had been stockpiling propane tanks like the apocalypse had a date. “We found 12 propane tanks in the basement, three fire extinguishers older than I am, and enough automotive fluids to service a small fleet.” The landlord had no idea any of it was down there until move-out day.

Lake of the Ozarks: The Pool Chemical Time Capsule. Chris handled a lakeside home near Osage Beach where the owners had maintained their pool for two decades without ever tossing an old chemical. “It was like an archaeological dig,” he says. “Pool shock from three different decades, algaecides that probably weren’t legal anymore, and enough chlorine to treat a public pool. Everything was in a humid shed, so half the containers were corroded through.”

Jefferson City: The State Worker’s Stockpile. Chris also cleared a garage in Jefferson City where a retired state employee had spent thirty years bringing home the leftovers. “Every time they cleaned out a supply closet at work, home came the surplus. Industrial floor cleaners, commercial disinfectants, office chemicals they don’t even make anymore. It was a museum of state government cleaning supplies.”

St. Charles: The Basement Chemistry Set. Trevor’s crew cleared a basement in St. Charles where the homeowner’s late husband had been an amateur woodworker and mechanic. “Wood stains, motor oils, hydraulic fluids, it was like he’d stocked up for every project imaginable and never used anything up,” Trevor recalls. “The widow just wanted it gone safely.” We found wood stains older than some of our crew.

Columbia: The Pre-Sale Panic. Dax helped a family getting ready to list their home near the MU campus who discovered 40-plus containers of chemicals stashed over 15 years. “Every time we started a project, we bought new supplies. We never used everything, but we never threw anything away either.” The house sold two weeks after we cleared it out. Turns out buyers don’t love a mystery chemical collection.

Different towns, different garages, same story every time. Nobody plans to become a hazardous waste collector. It just kind of happens, one “I might need this later” at a time.

Why People Call Us for Chemical & Hazardous Waste Removal

Let’s talk about why people actually call us for this stuff, because it’s rarely just about getting rid of things.

“I don’t want to hurt anyone.” This is the big one. Parents worry about kids finding old chemicals. Homeowners worry about neighbors getting sick. Business owners worry about liability. Everyone worries about doing the wrong thing and causing real harm.

“I have no idea what this even is.” Maybe you bought the house and inherited a garage full of faded labels. Maybe your spouse handled all the yard chemicals and now you’re staring at a shelf of mystery bottles. It’s overwhelming when you can’t even name what you’re dealing with.

“Nobody else will take it.” You’ve called three junk companies and two waste management services, and everybody keeps saying “we don’t handle hazardous materials.” Meanwhile the stuff just sits there, making you anxious every time you walk past.

“Is this going to cost me a fortune?” Handling it yourself can get expensive fast. Some facilities charge by the container, others by the pound, and you never know what you’re walking into. With us, you get an upfront estimate and no surprise fees.

We’ve been having these exact conversations for over 20 years. There’s no judgment here, only a way out.

What Happens to Your Hazardous Waste After We Haul It

Here’s what happens after we load your hazardous materials into the truck: they don’t vanish into a landfill somewhere. We work with certified disposal and recovery facilities across Missouri and Illinois to make sure everything gets handled the right way.

Paint and chemicals go to facilities that can either recycle them into new products or dispose of them safely. Some paint actually gets reprocessed and used again. Waste that becomes a resource instead of a problem.

Propane tanks get evaluated for reuse or recycling. The metal is recycled, and any leftover propane is safely captured.

Batteries head to specialized recyclers where the metals and chemicals get recovered and turned into new batteries or other products. They never see the inside of a landfill.

Automotive fluids go to facilities that clean and reuse them or break them down safely. Used motor oil, for instance, can be re-refined into new oil or industrial fuel.

We treat all of this with the same care we’d want if it was being hauled out of our own neighborhoods. Because it is. We live in these communities, from Columbia to St. Louis to the Lake, and doing it right isn’t optional.

Related Cleanout Services We Can Handle in the Same Visit

Most people who need hazardous waste gone are usually staring down a bigger cleanout too. Makes sense. If you’re finally tackling the garage full of old chemicals, you’re probably ready to deal with the broken lawn mower and the rusty patio furniture keeping it company.

A few things folks often add to the job while we’re already there:

  • Garage and shed cleanouts. We can handle the chemicals and the regular junk in the same visit and turn that catch-all space back into something usable.
  • Lawn equipment disposal. Old mowers, trimmers, and tillers tend to hang out with the old garden chemicals. We’ll take both.
  • Battery recycling. Car batteries, household batteries, rechargeables, we take them all, and it fits naturally when we’re already handling other hazardous materials.

Handling more than one thing in a single visit usually saves you time, and we can often bundle the pricing to save you money too.

Hazardous Waste Disposal Questions People Ask

Do I need to be there when you pick this stuff up?

We prefer it, especially for hazardous materials. We want to be sure we understand exactly what we’re dealing with, and you’ll want to see that we’re handling it properly.

Can you take chemicals that don’t have labels anymore?

Depends. If you can tell us what it is, probably. If it’s a total mystery, probably not. We’re careful, not psychic. That said, we can often help you figure out where mystery chemicals should go.

What if some of this stuff is really old?

Age isn’t automatically disqualifying, but it makes things interesting. Really old pesticides or automotive chemicals might need special handling. Call us first and describe what you’ve got.

Do you handle business hazardous waste too?

Yes, though commercial waste sometimes follows different rules. Small businesses with household-type chemicals are usually no problem. Industrial facilities with specialized chemicals, let’s talk first.

How much is this going to cost?

That’s what free estimates are for. Pricing depends on what you’ve got, how much, and where it has to go. We’ll give you an honest quote upfront with no surprise fees.

What if I’m not sure whether something is hazardous?

When in doubt, ask us. We’d rather field a dozen questions than have someone dispose of something the wrong way. Text us a photo. We’ve gotten pretty good at identifying mystery containers over the years.

20+ YEARS SERVING MISSOURI & ILLINOIS

Family-Owned Junk Removal Experts

Maddox with MrJunk® unloading one truck and using their dumpsters for sorting donations from junk

Fast & Easy Junk Removal

We’re not just the oldest locally-owned junk removal company in Mid-Missouri, we’re the most trusted. Recommended by neighbors who’ve watched us transform their most overwhelming spaces into clean, organized environments they can’t wait to use again.

Licensed, Insured, & Locally Trusted

We’re the original MrJunk®, not a franchise, not some fly-by-night operation. Dax started this company in Columbia back in 2005, and we’ve been building our reputation one satisfied customer at a time ever since. When you call us, you’re getting the team that’s been perfecting junk removal across Missouri and Illinois for over two decades.

Keeping Missouri & Illinois Cleaner & Greener

We don’t just haul your stuff away and call it a day. After 20+ years in this business, we’ve built partnerships with local charities throughout Missouri and Illinois because we know that one person’s junk is often another family’s treasure. Here’s what actually happens to your stuff: We donate what we can to local organizations, recycle electronics and metals properly, and dispose of the rest responsibly at licensed facilities. Because keeping our communities clean isn’t just good business, it’s what we do!

Junk We Can’t Take
Some Hazardous Materials

We’re strong, but we’re not hazmat specialists. Items like lead paint, asbestos, medical waste, chemicals, and other hazardous materials need specialized disposal through certified facilities. We also skip anything with active pest infestations, live electrical connections still wired into your house, and materials that require special permits we don’t carry. But here’s the thing – if we can’t take it, we’ll point you toward the right disposal solution. Most communities have hazardous waste collection events, and we know the proper facilities to recommend.
