Best Computer & Laptop Disposal & Recycling Missouri & Illinois | MrJunk®
Family-owned local crews recycling computers & laptops across Missouri & Illinois since 2005
Safe Computer & Laptop Disposal Throughout Missouri & Illinois
Last week, we hauled away a 1998 Gateway desktop from someone’s basement. Still had the original “Windows 98” sticker and everything. The owner looked at it and said, “I kept it because it has my old college papers on it.” That was fifteen years ago. The hard drive had crashed sometime during the Obama administration.
Sound familiar?
We get it.
That old laptop with the cracked screen has been sitting in your closet since 2019, “just in case you need something off it.” Your desktop computer is taking up half the garage, and every time you look at it, you think “I should probably do something about that.” Meanwhile, your kids are asking why you’re keeping a computer that’s older than their TikTok accounts.
Here in Missouri and Illinois, we’ve been helping families and home offices clear out their digital clutter since 2005. From Columbia students upgrading their college laptops to empty nesters in Lake of the Ozarks finally admitting that Windows Vista isn’t coming back, we handle computer and laptop disposal the right way—secure, legal, and completely hassle-free.
Why Proper Computer Disposal Is a Bigger Deal Than You Think
Most people don’t realize that old computer sitting in your spare room isn’t just clutter—it’s legally classified as e-waste. You can’t just toss it in the trash (seriously, Illinois will fine you), and dragging it to some random drop-off center means dealing with forms, hours of operation, and the nagging worry about what happens to your data.
Here’s what makes computers tricky:
Your old devices are basically digital filing cabinets filled with fifteen years of tax returns, family photos, passwords you forgot you saved, and that novel you started writing in 2016. Even if the screen is black and the thing won’t turn on, that hard drive might still be readable by someone with the right tools.
Plus, computers contain all sorts of materials that shouldn’t end up in landfills—mercury, lead, cadmium, and lithium that can contaminate groundwater if they’re not handled properly. Missouri and Illinois have specific e-waste regulations for a reason.
And let’s be honest about the real problem: You’ve been meaning to deal with this for two years, but between researching data wiping software and finding a certified recycling center that’s open when you’re not at work, it’s easier to just close the closet door and pretend the computer isn’t there.
What We Take (And What We Handle Differently)
Computers & Laptops We Remove:
- Desktop computers (towers, all-in-ones, mini PCs)
- Laptops of any age or condition (working or completely dead)
- Computer monitors (LCD, LED—but not old CRT tube monitors without special arrangement)
- External hard drives and storage devices
- Keyboards, mice, cables, and accessories
- Routers, modems, and networking equipment
- Printers and scanners (while we’re there)
What We Handle Specially:
CRT monitors (those thick, heavy old ones) need special handling because of the lead content. We can take them, but we’ll let you know upfront if there’s an additional disposal fee.
Loose batteries get handled with extra care—we’ve got proper containers and disposal methods for lithium batteries that might be swollen or damaged.
What We Don’t Do (But We’ll Tell You Who Does):
We don’t wipe your data—that’s your responsibility. We strongly recommend doing a factory reset or removing the hard drive before we arrive. If you’re not tech-savvy, ask a teenage relative. They’ll have it done in five minutes and probably judge your desktop wallpaper from 2012.
Why Missouri & Illinois Families Choose MrJunk® for Computer Disposal
We Know the Local Rules
Illinois banned computer disposal in regular trash back in 2012. Missouri has county-specific regulations that change depending on where you live. We handle all the compliance stuff so you don’t have to research what’s legal in your zip code.
We Show Up When We Say We Will
Unlike those big box store “recycling events” that happen twice a year and require you to wait in line behind forty other people with their dead printers, we come to you. On time. Even if it’s just one laptop.
We’re Actually From Here
Our Columbia headquarters means we understand Missouri weather delays, and our Illinois coverage means we know which communities have curbside restrictions. We’re not some national chain trying to figure out local regulations while standing in your driveway.
Real Stories from Real Customers:
Last month, we cleared out a home office in Jefferson City where the owner had four different laptops from four different decades. “I upgraded every few years but never got rid of the old ones,” she told us. “My husband said I was running a computer museum.”
We’ve removed desktop computers from basements in Alton that hadn’t been turned on since their kids left for college. We’ve hauled away broken laptops from Columbia apartments where college students learned the hard way that energy drinks and keyboards don’t mix.
And yes, we once removed a computer from a Lake of the Ozarks home that was still running Windows ME. We gave it the dignified retirement it deserved.
How MrJunk® Computer & Laptop Disposal Actually Works
Step 1: You Call, Text, or Email
Tell us what you’ve got. “One dead laptop” or “an entire home office worth of computer stuff”—we’ve heard it all. We can usually give you a ballpark estimate over the phone, especially for standard items like laptops and desktop computers.
Step 2: We Schedule Around Your Life
Evenings, weekends, whenever works for you. We know you probably can’t take time off work to get rid of a computer, so we work around real people’s schedules.
Step 3: We Show Up and Handle Everything
Our uniformed crew arrives with the right equipment to safely disconnect and remove everything. We handle the heavy lifting (those old desktop towers weigh more than modern refrigerators), wrap monitors properly, and make sure we’re not dragging cables through your house.
Step 4: Secure, Certified Disposal
We take everything to certified e-waste recycling facilities where usable components get refurbished and materials get properly processed. You get peace of mind knowing your old computer isn’t sitting in a landfill somewhere.
What MrJunk® Computer and Laptop Disposal Costs (We Tell You Upfront)
Here’s the thing about computer disposal pricing—it varies based on what you’ve got and where you are, but we’ll never surprise you with hidden fees.
- Typical residential computer removal runs $75-150, depending on the number of items and accessibility. A single laptop from your bedroom? Easy. Seventeen computers from a basement that requires navigating narrow stairs? That’s a different conversation.
- Why do some places charge extra fees you don’t find out about until they arrive? Because they’re hoping you’ll pay anything once they’re standing in your driveway. We don’t play those games. Our estimate is our estimate.
- Could you do this yourself? Sure. Rent a truck, research certified recycling centers, drive across town during business hours, wait in line, fill out forms, and hope you’re not violating any local disposal ordinances. Or you could call us and have it done by Tuesday.
Most of our customers tell us the convenience is worth every penny, especially when they factor in their time and the certainty that everything’s being handled legally and responsibly.
Specialized Situations We Handle
Estate Cleanouts with Multiple Computers
When we’re clearing out a loved one’s home, we often find computers in multiple rooms—the main desktop, old laptops in bedrooms, backup drives in closets. We handle all of it with sensitivity, understanding that each device might contain irreplaceable memories or important documents.
Home Office Transitions
Working from home means your computer setup probably evolved organically over several years. When it’s time to consolidate or upgrade, we can clear out everything from old monitors to tangled cables to that printer that stopped working in 2020 but somehow never left your desk.
Student Housing Computer Disposal
Columbia’s college population means we handle a lot of laptop transitions—students upgrading for graduation, parents clearing out dorm room leftovers, apartment cleanouts where the old computer “wasn’t worth moving.” We work around academic schedules and understand that student budgets are tight.
Privacy-Sensitive Removals
Some computers contain sensitive business information, medical records, or personal documents that require extra care. While we don’t provide data destruction services, we work with clients to ensure secure handling and can recommend certified data destruction services when needed.
Getting Ready for Us (Or Don’t—We’re Flexible)
If You Want to Prepare:
- Factory reset devices if they’re still functional
- Remove any personal files you want to keep
- Unplug everything (but don’t worry about organizing cables)
- Clear a path to the items if they’re in a crowded space
If You Don’t Want to Deal with It:
That’s fine too. We can unplug everything, and we’re used to working around cluttered spaces. Some of our best customers are the ones who say, “It’s all in the spare room, figure it out.”
What About Data Security?
We always recommend that customers handle their own data removal before we arrive. If the computer still turns on, do a factory reset. If you’re not comfortable doing that, remove the hard drive or ask someone tech-savvy to help.
We’re not computer technicians—we’re removal experts. Our job is getting the physical devices out of your space and to certified recycling facilities safely and legally.
Questions People Actually Ask Us About E-Waste Recycling
Do you guys wipe data from computers?
Nope, that’s not our thing. We’re the muscle, not the tech support. We strongly recommend you handle data removal before we arrive, or hire a tech professional if the information is sensitive.
Can I just put my old laptop in the regular trash?
Not legally in most places. Illinois specifically prohibits computer disposal in regular waste, and many Missouri counties have similar restrictions. Plus, there’s all that toxic stuff we mentioned earlier.
What if my computer is really old—like 15+ years?
Age doesn’t matter to us. We’ve removed computers that were old when Facebook was new. As long as it’s recognizable as a computer, we can take it.
Do you take broken computers?
Absolutely. Cracked screens, dead batteries, computers that won’t turn on—we take them all. Broken computers often contain the same toxic materials as working ones, so proper disposal is just as important.
What about all the cables and accessories?
We take everything computer-related while we’re there. Cables, keyboards, mice, speakers, external drives—if it plugged into your computer at some point, we can haul it away.
Can you take printers at the same time?
Definitely. Most computer cleanouts include printers, scanners, and other office equipment. It’s all e-waste, and it all needs proper disposal.
How do I know you’re actually recycling this stuff?
We work with certified e-waste facilities throughout Missouri and Illinois. We can provide documentation of proper disposal if you need it for business or personal records.
Other Ways We Can Help (While We’re Already There)
Home Office Furniture Removal
Getting rid of that old computer often means you need the desk gone too. We handle office furniture, filing cabinets, and those rolling chairs that lost their ability to roll sometime during the pandemic.
Printer and Electronics Recycling
Most people have more than just computers when they’re cleaning out their home office. Printers, scanners, fax machines (yes, some people still have those), and other electronics can all go at the same time.
Garage and Basement Cleanouts
Computers often live in storage areas along with boxes of other stuff you’ve been meaning to deal with. While we’re clearing out your digital clutter, we can tackle the rest of the clutter too.
Apartment and Moving Cleanouts
Moving and don’t want to pack that heavy desktop? We can clear out electronics along with furniture, appliances, and anything else you’re not taking to the new place.
Why We Handle Computer Disposal Differently
Environmental Responsibility
Keeping Missouri and Illinois cleaner and greener isn’t just our tagline—it’s why we partner with certified e-waste recyclers who actually break down components responsibly instead of shipping everything overseas or dumping it in landfills.
No Judgment Zone
We’ve seen it all. Computers from the Clinton administration, laptops held together with duct tape, home offices that look like Best Buy exploded. We’re not here to judge your digital hoarding—we’re here to help you move forward.
Local Knowledge
We know which Missouri counties require special handling for electronics, which Illinois municipalities have e-waste drop-off events, and which recycling centers actually follow through on their environmental promises. You don’t have to research any of this.
Professional Service
Our crews are uniformed, background-checked, and trained to handle electronics safely. We protect your floors, walls, and other belongings while removing your computer equipment.
